My 502's seem to be smoking more then they should at idle. I didn't notice it when on the hose or on the first trip to the water, but the last two trips on the water it has been very noticable. It is white smoke... doesn't look/smell like oil. Any thoughts before I take it in to be looked at?

Did you hide your stash near the headers? [smilie=657.gif]

Both engines? sounds like a water leak in your block. Whats the oil look like?

Does it show any loss of power, overheating, or bad chit like that?
If the oil looks good, I'll bet it's just steam in the exhaust outlets after the engine reaches operating temps.
Just a thought....

Oil looks good, both engines do the same, runs fine at all speeds. Haven't had it on a long run yet.
I probably better take it in and have it checked just to be sure  . I just havn't been around many 502's, so thought I would ask.
Prolly just steam dude. Dont sweat it. When the water temp is as cold as it is they do that. Mine looks like amer3's cat when the water is this cold.
I dont think water leaking into the block would leave thru the exhaust. If you are taking water in the block you will get a steamy chocolaty milky discharge out the PCV and the dipstick tube. (at least the 502's I am familiar with)

I think the Farmer is correct. I'd guess steam as well. My 502 smokes when it's cold out as well.

No milky discharge here... been a long winter  , sounds like the 502's are OK. I will keep a close watch of the oil, but sounds like just a false worry from a new 502 owner.

Don't sweat it yet, does it start after you been running and then go away a couple minutes after returning to idle? If yes, it's the humidity, you'll get this when it's high, even in the summer on cool damp mornings and evenings.

No humidity here... what should the water temp be running? Only notice smoke when idling... don't see it when running faster.

Probably not smoke, just steam. Stick your head in it and gt a big wiff. I bet it has no oil odor at all. I've seen other twin 502's do the same thing.

It is just steam, my 502mpi looks like a fog bank is following me when the lake water temps are cold at idle. It is tough to see if it is putting out alot of smoke when you are running WFO. [smilie=yikes]
One suggestion, check your oil levels often, 502's use oil, normally.

The water temp depends on which thermostat they installed. normally they should run between 145 - 160. However they should not move around alot. If they raise under idle and cool down on plane then your seet pump is probably getting weak.
The steam issue is not a worry. They will steam on all cool nights at idle. If you climb back there you will smell the steam.
YYour doing the right thing by watching the oil if it does not get milky then have a great summer.
