My boat has 5.5 inch diameter holes for component speakers. Do I buy the common 6.5 inch component sets or the 5.25 inch speakers?

They are in the gunnals on the sides of the cockpit, It was a custom job but when the guy traded the boat in he pulled his stereo system. So now I'm rebuilding the stereo and dont want to order speakers that wont fit these 5.5 inch diameter holes. If you pm me your email adress I can send you pictures of the set up.I would think a 5.25 inch component speaker would have a lip lager than 5.5 to fit right in but I dont know were they measure from the flange or the speaker?

Go to a stereo store and measure some speakers. Then you will know if you can handle the bigger ones or not.

I was trying to to save a trip to town. Thought some of you experts would know this off the top of your heads. Then I was going to order off ebay and again, no trip to town. I cant just go to Best Buy of NFM and see everything cause I live down hear in the sticks ya see. [smilie=265.gif] Thanks for the input though.

I put 5.25's in the bow of my crownline. I had to cut the holes in the bench seat to fit the new 6x9's, since they were originally cut to fit 5.25's.

This might be kinda late but if you have a 5 1/2" hale that's gonna be for a 6 1/2" speaker a 5 1/4" will be to small. [smilie=twocents.gif]

Thanks for the info I actually installed 2 pairs last weekend in the boat. Bought the 6.5s and they fit perfect even the tweeters fit well. each pair is ran buy a sperate 4oo watt amp, sound s great.
thats A LOT OF POWER per pair.
if that amp is 400 max.
200 per channel
120 watts rms per channel
thats a high quality 6.5 to handle that much rms wattage
The best 6.5" can handle up to 90 watts rms. unless you are running competetion 6.5"'s
you may be able to put that 800 watts to better use, spread the power.
All you need is about 50-65 watts rms to the 6.5"'s each. anymore than that you need a sub.

Why not just hang the speakers from your rollbar?
Oh, you don't have a rollbar, sorry, sucks to be you! [smilie=071.gif] [smilie=071.gif] [smilie=071.gif]

I'm working on a new system for my boat. Going with a Kenwood KVT-715DVD head unit and two pair of KFC-1779ie 6 1/2 in the cabin. Not sure what I'm going to do in the cockpit. Right now it's got 2 10" Kicker subs, a pair of Clarion 6X9 and a pair of Clarion 6 1/2. I just need to get some amps for the cockpit speakers now. Then I can make some noise. [smilie=1074.gif]

Iv'e got the 4 subs in there to they run off a seperate amp. I have the 400 watt amps set on low so I dont blow the components, thats thew plan anyhow. The Amps were cheap and used off Ebay. The 400 watt amps are 2 channel so I didnt want to run more speakers and drop down to 2 Ohms and have the amps heating up. It seems to work. The whole system practically, was pieced together off Ebay, so I dont have a lot invested if, I do blow something.
DJ-I,m not cool enouph to have a rollbar, that would also be known as a ROPS for the farmer. [smilie=265.gif]

How do you like those Kicker subs? I am looking at two of their 10 inch marine subs for my 382.

Mine are not the marine type ( they came with the boat ) and whoever installed them did not put them in boxes, but I'm going to build some boxes and give them a try before I put them in the round file. They do look like they have held up to the moisture with out being marine speakers. I used nonmarine speakers in my last boat and never had any problems with them. Just look for speakers with durable cones like polypropylene and rubber surrounds.

I had one in my 206 Coblat and it worked and sounded great. I got them from www.saltyswarehouse.com not sure if they still have them or not.
I put 6- 2way 5 1/2 polk audios and 1-Alpine 10" sub on my crownline. running 1 lighting audio about 1200 watts.
ALL the speakers are running off that one amp. Last year it cut off a few times but thats was because it overheated from TEXAS HEAT and playing alllllll DAYYYYYYYY.
Lightning audio amps are cheap , but they hold up well.
hell its my third year with this amp on the water and it still goes strong.
I do need to upgrade my sub to about a 12"
I thinking about running 2- 6x9 on the sun deck. I saw this alot last year. People would use the portable 6x9's and place them on the sun deck and let them blast across the channel.
They sounded reallly gooooooodd!
better than some EXPENSIVE systems.
As far as a roll bar, thats the way to go if you want to rock the cove.
Get 4 speakers on that rack and let it rip!
