View Full Version : 2nd Annual "Mind if I Smoke?" run July 4th week at

SummerObsession

Last year, the run was on Thursday to meet at noon at Big Dick's Halfway Inn (47mm).
We all met at Backwater Jack's cove around 11:00 (14mm?), then ran to BD's.
Some things I was thinking for this year:
1. Try to have someone arrive at BD's early to check on things. We had enough people last year that the owners will be MORE than glad to rope off the docks and reserve the entire upstairs for us this year.
2. Get a band or something. As posted on other thread, something like Raggae, jazz, or something cool for an afternoon of fun!
3. Slow the run down so everyone can have fun on the way there. I tried to lead the way and find the cove last year (it's VERY hard to spot coming from that direction!). Perhaps a "marker" boat in the channel would help.

Any other suggestions?
BTW, this is a "non-denominational" (as in posted on EVERY available boating forum) event. The more the merrier!

I'm in just let me know the date.

I think you have some good ideas. Last year a lot of poeple (including myself) left after lunch so some additional entertainment might keep more people around.

It was pretty rough in the back of the pack. I held back a bit so I could take some pictures (which I can't find  ) so that makes it a little hard to stay together. Maybe need to give the smaller boats a 5 minute head start if they want.

The hard part will be finding someone the sit at the cove and wait for us to arrive. Maybe someone with a smaller boat that wants to meet everyone but doesn't want to get beat up in the chop.

Also you may want to allow 30 minutes fro Chad to change out what ever breaks [smilie=071.gif]

LOL!!!! mike, 30 minutes???? i'll have you know that i've been practicing all winter. i can now swap out a motor in less than 23 minutes.....i carry an extra one in the cabin! [smilie=050.gif] i can change a drive (in the water) in 7 minutes. i'm thinking of giving up the banking career and starting my own mobile, underwater marine repair business at the lake! [smilie=071.gif] i'm working on a new technique that involves motor repair from the under the boat....that way you won't be caught in any pictures with your hatch up!!!! [smilie=071.gif]

Mike you are BRUTAL!! I'm LMFAO!
I will have to sabotage Speedy again this year (oops, did I say that) to beat him.

When it gets closer I was thinking of finding some volunteers that don't want to get pounded to head out a little early. I can always do it myself as well.

Chad that underwater boat repair business could come in REAL handy this year!

never the less, we'll have fun toying with Troutly on the 4th! [smilie=265.gif]

john- what if this year, we had a designated stop point along the way, where people could fuel up, grab a drink from the cooler or even take a short swim to cool off? it would also give everyone a chance to get back together as a group before heading off on the final leg. any ideas on a midway stopping point?

Good idea. OK, what about cliff divers spot? I can't remember where that is exactly.
Or another cove that is easy to access.

A trip to Topless cove after lunch would be cool.
If you have never been there, it's kinda Part Cove Lite. Only three miles from BD's or less.

cfaller
03-29-2004, 10:49 AM
the cliff diver's spot would be good....what MM is it? what about the hurricane deck bridge at the 35MM? it would be easy enough for people to find and see.

SummerObsession
03-29-2004, 10:53 AM

SummerObsession

Hurricane bridge is good. That's where I usually buy fuel. Buddy from KC has a house around the corner.

Wonder if we could turn it into an "informal" Poker run? As in hand out card before we left, at the stop, and the remainder at Big Dick's?

Probably get into too much liability, but it is an idea.

cfaller
03-29-2004, 11:03 AM
i think if it is too organized a "regatta permit" is required by the MOWP.....then again if no $$ is charged to boat in the group, it really is just a bunch of friends boating together, right?!?!

SummerObsession
03-29-2004, 11:21 AM
That's true. Might have to table that one.

We should probably focus on the entertainment at BD's more for now.

Any ideas?

how about Dale Blue? if you have never heard of him, he not only gets them dancing, but he makes you drink after every song! he also has each woman in the crowd come up on stage and play the tamberine while he sings......he throws in nasty comments about them in the middle of the song! however, the only problem is that i believe he plays at salty dog from 2-9 on sat. & sun. check him out www.daleblue.com

Last year, they were concerned as to whether we would show up or not. I'm sure they have had TONS of people say they were coming and then not show. I'm sure they will be a lot more relaxed this year.
It wuold be great to have someone there that could help dock people, etc. The name of the game is FUN, so whatever you would want to do would be GREAT!!

Guys, this is an event that is OPEN TO ALL!!!!

Last year, just by word of mouth and message boards, we had 15-20 boats show up JUST FOR A LUNCH RUN!!
The idea is to meet as many people from ALL message boards face to face, as well as seeing and appreciating one anothers boats in person, not just a pic on the internet!

ASH, I truly hope you can make it to this run, us farmer types need to stick together!!

True, we named it "Mind if I smoke" in reference to Cigarette boats, but it would not be any fun if everyone stayed home!!!

Besides, EVERY offshore looking boat is a "Cigarette boat" in the eyes of many!!

All you Nebraska guys get together and make a run to LOTO!! I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

ASH
03-30-2004, 08:01 AM
What I meant by "invite myself" was I would be bringing my boat and wanted to do this run with the ciggys.

I am the one who will take my boat 50 miles on the Mo river for a $4 hamburger even thought there a plenty of other boats/friends going to the exact same spot. I REALLY like to drive.

So back to the question at hand------- any chicks up my way going to make it for the 4th weekend seems I only have Gina and myself so far.

btw: thanks for the invites on the other boats. That is very bold when you dont even know me. I could be a crazy man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [smilie=1062.gif]

This is not a Cig only event. In fact, there were more other brand boats last year than Cigs!
It was a fun, relaxed event.

I am with you ASH on the driving thing. That's one of the main reasons we organized this thing. I'm really not one for tossing out the anchor in the cove and sitting all day.
Party Cove is fun, but I like to burn up my share of dead dinosaurs as well!!!

ASH
03-31-2004, 10:40 PM
Dude if I leave BWJ at 11 I wont be to B Dicks until 2:30. I will have to stop at Capts. Getaway for a bird of paradise and my boat only goes 45. I will wave to you as you are headed home.

Being "there by noon easily" means I will be leaving at 9 or so.

I am still in. Maybe I can borrow some horsepower for the day.

kevinm
03-31-2004, 10:51 PM
Uh, Ash, I think it is Captains Galley. And I am with you. It is easily a two and a half hour boat ride for me. I live by Back Water Jacks and I know I would never ever make it in an hour. I can't even keep up with you at 45.

Von Bongo
04-01-2004, 08:54 AM
Maybe we should leave at 10 and plan on getting there at 12:30? It's a fine line as seems like people had a hard time getting to BWJ by 11am last year. I know a couple people got left and we left BWJ late...but hey its an unorganized fun run so getting to BDHI is really only one of two rules I know of, the other is to have fun!

the other thing to consider is on friday the lake traffic will start to pick up signicantly after 11 and that just makes it harder on smaller boats.

Troutley if you are referring to the place just past our bank down the street from JB Hooks. I am pretty sure that it is closed. Not that it won't reopen but last I knew they were out of business. You might have to run up 54 towards Eldon if you want to catch the ballet [smilie=eck02.gif]

GrumpyBullet
04-01-2004, 09:33 AM
I like the sound of Leaving at 10 and getting there at 12. That way we can we can all cruise at 30 - 35 Mph and Cruise in a big pack. That would be a sight.

SummerObsession
04-01-2004, 09:38 AM
Von Bongo has some good points.
See the poll for the day of the run. I will vote for Friday as it would be great to get as many people as possible to be there.
However, VB is right that the traffic will be picking up tremendously.
Also, it may be harder to get Big Dicks to save docks, etc. although I don't think that will be a problem. I will call them tomorrow to get our foot in the door and make some preliminary plans.
We can post a new poll for the time if we need to, but I think that as long as we have a few recon people, we can leave at 10:30 -11:00 and still have no problems. If there a some that want to leave earlier, that would be great too!
Don't forget it's all about the [smilie=1062.gif] and the [smilie=eck02.gif] and the [smilie=alc] and the [smilie=rocker]

One good thing to remember is that your only going to see choppy water until the 28 MM once you make that turn its like night and day any time. I also think most of the wake is going to be coming from us. Last year it was only us on the lake but if you where running in the middle or the back it was rough. Just something to think about. We are going to have a great time at big dicks and that’s the main issue if your in a 20 foot boat it might be a good idea to get a head start. Not that I am telling any one what to do. At lease until we get down to the 30 MM where the lake is wider and the water is more calm.

bradman
04-01-2004, 02:27 PM
Ok, how is this for a plan. Since we are planning a pit stop anyway. All boats that are less than 25 feet, meet at 10 and leave at 10:30 and head to the rendevous point. Then the big boys can leave at 11 and do your thing. If it all works out, we all may end up at the rendevous at the same time. We can all have a cocktail at that point and all run the final leg to Big Dicks together. How does that sound? Besides, if the water is rough and I am running 30 to 35, I am going to have to unload Ms. Bradman somewhere [smilie=071.gif]

I am officially agreeing with whatever unofficial plan you all come up with. Officially.

OK, here is the deal so far:
Friday, July 2nd, 2004
Primary meeting location is Backwater Jacks cove.
Departure time will be 11:00 a.m.

Other boats that want to leave earlier or are staying further down the lake can meet at the rendevous point (TBA-perhaps the bridge?).

Recon boats will be at Halfway Inn no later than 11:45. This will allow time to organize docking and maybe a pre [smilie=1062.gif] or two.

Everything I am hearing says to go for Friday instead of Thursday, so it is now offically offical (unless it gets vetoed-then it's offically unoffical. Again)

That work for everyone so far?

Ya that is right Capts. Getaway is in Okoblowme. I always confuse the two names.

Grumpy, didn't we run on Thursday last year too? I think that might account for some of the lack of traffic. And you are right we did make some waves and it was a heck of a sight and sound when we all left.

We did have it Thursday and that is way the traffic was slow, But the 4th also landed on Friday last year as well. I was just bring up the point that there was very little traffic on the lake last Mind if I smoke and it was still rough as hell, for us I ran right next to you some of the way down and we where in the middle of the pack. So even if we ran it this year on Thursday yes there would be less traffic on the lake but the small boats are to be running in the back and still get beat up. No biggie I was just wanted to give people in smaller boats a heads up so they don’t get mad if they fall behind. Last years Mind if I smoke was one of the funniest time I have had on a Boat. I felt like the big boys in the races. All the rough water and boats every where. Simply awesome. Now you have that Bad ass Top Gun so no more middle of the pack for you any more!

You're right Grump, this year has all the makings of being a huge time!
Last year was definitely a "see if anyone shows up" year. It was thrown together at the last minute and turned out to be a blast.
I am calling Big Dick's today to line up things way ahead of time, and we are already posting on three different boards!
I'm like you, I had a blast running up the lake with all the other boats.
I think this year will be the same format, but anyone who doesn't want to run hard, or is concerned about the traffic can meet at a convenient location about half way, or just meet everyone at Big Dicks at noon.
This is, by design, a very relaxed, loosely organized event that focuses on fun, relaxation, and meeting other boating board addicts in person!
We hope to organize the lunch and entertainmment at Big Dicks into something a little more than just eating together.
The owners of this fine establishment are performance boat nuts, so I am sure they will be more than accomodating.
As VonBongo said: I predict another succesful and fun day of boating!!!

It turned out pretty good for just a last minute event. [smilie=071.gif] I am sure that BD's will welcome use! I really like the fact that we are going to have a stopping point half way. It will give every one a chance to run together.

Date: Friday, July 2nd
Time: 10:30-12ish
Place: Big Dick's Halfway INN (what a name for a business)

Halfway point ????

How long is this run:
Miles?
Hours?

Halfway point should be past the rough waters. I think that would be a good place for the 20'ftrs to start at. I hate rough water, its a headache and it shakes the beer and might TAP the Kegs.
But the site at BD's will be something no one wants to miss.(all the perform. boat)

so maybe:

Arrivals

20'fts at BD @ 10:30
Big boys at BD @ 11:30

Departing BD

20 ft's leave 30 minutes before big boys and meet at halfway point.

All boats head to cove at one time from the halfway point.

Ok, I had it backwards, I thought we were leaving from BD's and going to the party cove.

But it looks like we are leaving a cove and ending up at BD's. Is that correct?

The trip is about 30 miles so that about an 45 min-1hr boat ride.?.?.?

Not trying to be diofficult just trying to be sure Im clear on how this is going to unfold.

Im not from about those parts (lololol)

We had a blast year. There is just no way I can see myself making it though. The new little guy is due to emerge around the end of June and we'll be moving sometime in mid June also.

Until 2:30. I will have to stop at Capts. Getaway for a bird of paradise and my boat only goes 45.

Who timmed the boat this time? Let's put in some 101 and let me turn up the mags [smilie=061.gif]

SAND BAGGER

In ten years of going to the lake I've never been on a 4th of July.

I'll see if Kalfran of Super 8 has any room left, DJ you guys want to split a room if ND can go? We can take the little 25 down and be the turn beacon down at 47 1/2 for the big fellas.

Put ND and HM on the back of the boat topless in thongs so they don't miss us when they come by at 96 mph [smilie=eck02.gif]

We may have to do the Bradman suggestion. I'm sure if we're in the middle we'll get hammered. Looking forward to a fun day!!!!!

You goonier----- dont get a room at the motel ----- curty and vicki, myself, bsb and jen, charlie and heidi 10 bedrooms total at stoneledge. I would imagine someone would be willing to accomodate. I know BSB still has an extra slip and Charlie may as well.

btw: If you want to come for the ride only be my guest. I know how you are about driving as well so suit yourself. I wouldnt mind the topless thongys on my boat.

I'm kind of hard to get along with [smilie=657.gif] I talked to LK tonight about going down for the 4th and she thinks it sounds like a good idea. [smilie=061.gif]

We'll try for the 4th, but not easy to get vacation that time of year. We'll know kind of last minute, so we may be whoring a ride and a couch.

You real Doctors get up way too early in the morning. [smilie=265.gif]
I've got a bunch of people lined up to go to this thing, 3 boats so far, maybe more.
Is the pit stop still on at the Captains Galley for those that need a rest?

I think the Galley is still the place.
The main thing is that everyone show up at Big's by noon!
It should be a great time, glad to see you are coming, bring MORE if you can!!

Grumpy, didn't we run on Thursday last year too? I think that might account for some of the lack of traffic. And you are right we did make some waves and it was a heck of a sight and sound when we all left.

I vote for friday.

I think we are getting a good informal plan together and I predict another successful and fun day of boating.

GrumpyBullet IS right on it can get rough You jest have to run up frount it's a lot smoother there [smilie=050.gif] I have some video from last year I'LL try to post later
