I can't make it, but this would be a great run to make. The Apostle Islands is one cool area. When I was 15, I did a week out and about on Lake Superior around the Apostle Islands on 52' blow boat. Unbelievable, crystal clear water, fantastic scenery, BIG water. Lake Superior is cold as ice though, I'd love to go back and check it out sometime.

We have a house on Lake Owen (Drummond) not too far from Ashland and Bayfield and we absolutely love the Apostle Islands. I will be there the two weeks prior--sure wish I could join you! [smilie=106.gif] When LOTO gets too crazy, we go up north. Usually rent the LOTO house and get out of town. Been going up north for over 40 years. There's a great drinking place on Madelin Island--with a reggae flair. Maybe next year! PM me if you have questions about the area. --Jeff

100-mph boats worry slower Wisconsin sailors

July 25, 2005

ASHLAND, Wis. -- A speedboat rally in the Lake Superior waters of Chequamegon Bay and the Apostle Islands later this week is stirring up some anxiety among enthusiasts of paddle and sail sports who worry the event will set a dangerous precedent.

The first Apostle Islands Poker Run is expected to draw nearly 30 sport boats that measure 35 to 40 feet long and can reach speeds of 100 mph.

Jeff Rennicke, a board member of the Friends of the Apostle Islands group, said he's not against power boats.

''But these cigarette boats are too loud, too fast and there's too many of them at once,'' he said. ''The noise is going to impose on a lot of people who come here for peace and quiet. ... But the real issue is the safety of all of the other people recreating out there.''

Organizers said they'll donate any proceeds from the run to help refurbish Apostle Islands lighthouses. AP

Boaters say safety is priority at rally

APOSTLE ISLANDS: A cigarette boat rally to take place Saturday has drawn opposition because of the boats' speed and noise.

BY JOHN MYERS

NEWS TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

A cigarette boat rally in and around the Apostle Islands is scheduled to proceed Saturday, albeit with slower speeds and a different course than originally planned.

The Apostle Islands Offshore Poker Run will leave Ashland about 9:45 a.m. Saturday and make five stops before returning to Ashland in the afternoon.

``We've got everything in place, and it looks like the weather is going to cooperate. We're going to have a good run,'' said Mike Cariveau, a Twin Cities boater and vice president of Apostle Islands Offshore. ``We've met with the local (law enforcement) officials up here and I think everyone is on the same page. It's going to be a fun, safe event.''

One of the stops will be in Bayfield, where the boaters will break for lunch. There, some protesters are expected to quietly greet them.

Opposition has surfaced against the rally because of the high-performance boats' potential speeds -- they can travel at more than 100 mph -- and because of their noise. Others say the rally, the first of its kind on western Lake Superior, sets a bad precedent for an area that has formed its tourism industry and reputation on kayaking, sailboats, fishing and slow-touring motorboats.

``We're going to have a few people on the dock at Bayfield for a quiet protest to let them know what we think. We'll be carrying signs that say `Shhhhh!' '' said Jeff Rennicke, a local author and an opponent of the speedboat rally. ``There's going to be a safety issue out there on Saturday. . . . But, long term, the real issue is how Bayfield wants to define itself. This is a watershed moment for where the community goes from here.''

Both the Friends of the Apostle Islands Lakeshore and the Bayfield Area Chamber of Commerce have expressed concern about the event. Members of the chamber's board of directors were surveyed this week, and the majority responded that the Poker Run is not compatible with the organization's mission statement.

About 30 of the big, fast boats, most from outside the region, are expected for the rally, which involves picking up playing cards at five stops. The boat with the best poker hand at day's end wins the event. Rally time or finishing order doesn't matter.

Rally organizers have modified their course slightly to accommodate concerns of law enforcement officials, mostly to stay outside some busy areas. Organizers have vowed to motor at idle speed when entering and leaving harbors.

It appears the boaters have agreed not to travel faster than 90 miles per hour at any time.

Bob Krumenaker, superintendent of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, will address all of the boat captains Saturday morning before the rally. He met with rally organizers Wednesday and is satisfied the group will be respectful of other boaters in the area.

While some groups have asked Krumenaker to stop the race, he's noted that the Park Service has no authority over the water more than one-quarter mile from any island within the lakeshore. There also are no state or federal speed limits.

``We've let them know what some of our concerns are. And we're going to stress safety and watching for some of the other vessels they may come across out there,'' Krumenaker said. ``But they aren't doing anything illegal. And they seem to be very conscientious about how they want to do this.''

SSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH........Shut The F(*k Up!!!! [smilie=101.gif] Were they quit protesters...you know the ones that drive the big SUV's and complain about our last natural resource!

First time on the board here since the run...sorry for the late reply. The run was awesome...great people. great water and great weather. Even the protesters were great. Hell, without them we would have never made the front page of every paper in the area...even AP released an article on the event! I even talked to people from Milwakee that had T-shirts printed up that said powerboaters have rights too...and drove all the way to Bayfield just to support us! Next years event will be even better, and with all this publicity, better sign up early as I'm sure it will fill up. For those of you who know the story, it was great being back on the water boating and everything ran great...next planned stop...the Liquid Jungle.
Thanks again to all those who attended.

Hope to join you all the next time! Any t-shirts printed up celebrating the event? Any extras for sale? As a Bayfield County property owner and Bayfield/Ashland regular, I'd proudly wear your colors! (Especially when sailing and huggin trees)! BTW, You can't imagine how many tree huggers ask to rent our waverunners when they are beached at LaPointe by the Beach Club. [smilie=011.gif]

Hey, I'm sorry but its an awfully big lake. Maybe these folks need to spend a weekend at LOTO for a serious reality check. [smilie=106.gif]

DBOMB, my hangout is usually Chequamegon Saloon (when it was owned by Tim and Connie Duchant) and the Black Bear. I use to hang out at Helen's back when it was "Just Left Bar and Grill". I've known Craig at Bear Country forever. How'd you end up at my secret piece of paradise and the barstool races at Helen's?
