View Full Version : Best boat for the Money
Triple C

Lets say you just won or inherited a large sum of money, and you had a large chunk left over for a boat.
You do not care if the boat is used or new. You just want to make a smart purchase, and get the most and best for your money. A boat that you get noticed on, but is not the most expensive thing on the lake.
What do you buy?
Why that brand?
Anyone want to put me down as a beneficiary, I'm willing.

I'd go for a lime/orange Eliminator in the 26 -28 foot range. I hear most of the owners of those keep the hours on the motors REALLY low!!! [smilie=265.gif] [smilie=265.gif]

I think I would get an obscene Black Thunder in the 40 foot range give or take a few feet or a 42 Baja with triple 600s.

I found my favorite for the money, In the high $200's used, 50 foot Hustler, Triple 575sc's, nice lines.
Baja Tender

I would look for a boat with a crack or two on it, low hours or maybe not really even been used but talked about alot, real bright colors like orange, yellow, the neon green look, made down south. [smilie=point2.gif]

I think I'd buy used still so you don't take the hit on new and get a boat with very nice power, but not motors that need to be rebuilt around 50 hours.
I think most of the brands on the water hold their value a few I would suggest in random order that I like are: Formula, Donzi, Baja, Cobalt, Eliminator, Cigarette.
I'd stick with 525's or 500's - factory Merc blue power.
Formula 4 Play
03-25-2005, 10:13 AM
First of all I would want a place to put it. A large lake like Loto or the a place down south on the coast.
The Boat. The older I get I'm really starting to like the sport cruisers. Some thing like the Formula 40 super sport. Cruiser interior with a fastech step hull. as for power if I can't have diesel, Blue power all the way.

Do you care if you ever see the money again? If you want an investment then there is only one. A used Cig, especially Top Guns. Nothing seems to hold there value like Cigs.

This is the easiest question ever SKATER.............................No other boat is built near the guidelines SKATER sets. There are alot of really bad a$$ boats out there but only one SKATER.
Did I mention SKATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

4 Play makes a good point..I too would make sure that I had ample room to put her!! Then probably look for an old Apache 41 with moderate to big power or a used Cig Top Gun....
FunHome

I'd buy and sell all the good deals I found!! I'd probably have to have a Outerlimits and maybe a Skater. But, I probably wouldn't keep them very long, I'd be buying a selling them..... Of coarse I'd let my buddy's from here on MidWestBoat have great deal on the boats - first dibs!!
I'd also have the Baddest High Performance Boat Compound the Lake of the Ozarks has ever seen!! I'd buy an old marina, or at least a ton of Frontage that was somewhat level for me to build my Lake home with guest house's, complete with a Big Boat Ramp for us to use and a Huge "Race" Shop, someplace for us to tinker with the boats we have. Hopefully I'd have some extra lots to sell to a select few that understand High Performance and wouldn't complain when I fired up 1500hp Sterlings at 8am in the morning!!! Oh yea, then we would have a Dock that was off the hook probably two stories with a party pavilion on top!!! It would have to have enough slips for a large V bottom in the 46 to 51ft range (Black thunder, Hustler, Nor Tech, Outerlimits) one for a large Cat (Skater, Nor Tech, MTI, Etc. ) Big A$$ Party Boat like a 63 Sea Ray or something along those lines ( we would figure out a way to get it on the Ozarks!) Plus the dock would have to have a ski boat (I'll leave that to Dr. Jeff) a Runabout - probably a Chris Craft (their lines are very classy) A Fast as Heck Fish'in boat - Like a Allison or something that runs over 100mph. a Fleet of Waverunners for friends and family, maybe even a couple of Sea-Doo twin engine Jet boats that we could race around the bouys we put out in front of the dock. Plus a couple extra slips for anal friends that get too drunk to drive home and don't want their boats to get DEWED on!!!
But besides that I really haven't given it much thought!! [smilie=050.gif]

You are absolutly 100% right. There isn't another cat built that will hold there value like a skater. Plus they are the highest quality boat on the water.

I concur... but it would be a tough decision against the right BlackThunder. I would also look for a slightly used one. I'm not sure I would buy a new boat again.

I personally would rather have a NorTech cat.

On Lake Cumberland in southeastern Kentucky, there is a guy that lands his helicopter on top of his house boat which is kept @ Grider Hill Marina. This is after he flys his plane into the Monticello Airport!

I love the look of a Nor-Tech and they do offer a large cabin they just ride bow high and are a slow boat. I think that would directly relate to the cabin size and accomadations.
As far as the dream goes, FunHome nailed it. Sounds like boating paradise....but if I had to pick a few, I'd have a 50' Nortech, a huge cruiser, a fleet of jet skis just to get me through the spring. more to come..................

Because no one in my family will ever leave me $20 mil, I'd probably put most of it into a house or two, making sure to leave enough aside for an old red and white Donzi Z-33 Crossbow. I love the lines on that thing!

It would definately be a 460 Black Thunder for me.
Here is my choice. 118', 3 x 5600hp gas turbines for power. 2 x 370 diesels just for docking. 95 tons and it cruises at 69.1 MPH. I hope you got a large limit on your visa card because it holds 5812 gallons of fuel.
Wallypower 118. No idea what this baby costs. I guarentee you would have everybodys attention when you pulled up to dock at the Toad on Saturday nite or made a pass thru PC.

That one came to mind too JMS...since I saw that "Super Yachts" show on Fine Living, I've been hoping to hit the largest jackpot in Lottery history...those were some SWEET, SWEET rides....

I'd want something I could still trailer reasonably safe. That eliminates anything over 42' for me. All used:
42 Cig Tiger or 38 TG
40 Outlaw
37 Outerlimits
42 Fountain Lightning

They are tandem duallies.....Myco makes them, I looked a 40 advantage on one, they are sweet trailers.

What if you had the choice of selecting a MWBP member's boat.
My two favorites where sold, but
Von Bongo's 38 Cig, &
Summer O's Playboy Cig.
and I think I'm gonna like Sullies went it's done as well.

What did Von Bongo's look like? I probably have seen it, but my old age is setting in. This is mine, which I am happy with for now. I liked JBK's old Speedy, But I think I would still take N-lo instead.

Thanks Chad. To be honest with you, why own another boat? You could walk up to any boat you want a ride on with N-lo and have her say "I sure would like a ride on your boat". They will probably be falling over themselves to help you two aboard!! ( I know I would) You can have all that fun and not have the expense of ownership!!!! [smilie=071.gif]

Chris- there are advantages to not owning a boat, but the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. N-Lo and I are actually waiting to hear back on an offer we placed on a boat. if it goes through, i'll let the cat out of the bag....until then, the deal is "Top Secret". we are keeping our fingers crossed.
funny you should mention it, but N-Lo always makes me keep bail money around...you never know when you'll need it. i'd like to see a lot of things in NY, but i'm not sure if i'm up for a tour of "Crowbar College".

10 years ago, when I started going down to LOTO, I saw the 38 scarab, I thought it was the boat. Nice lines, good racing background. But since they stopped making them and I heard that some had cracking problems, I change over the years.
I still think they are a good looking boat, just wish they continued making them.
