yah, first post for a newbie.
Anyway, I took several photos last year after I finally decided to get a digital SLR. I just checked and this was 4 seconds, f/11, and fairly high ISO (2000). I didn't really experiment much with it since they weren't all that long. I may have been playing around at this instance with a neutral density filter, but cannot remember.

Long exposures are definitely the way to go with fireworks- 2 to 4 seconds is a good rule of thumb.
Last year in Sarasota I wanted to try something different and get the shots close to the moment of ignition, and get in close so I used a long telephoto.
