Got an upgraded camera the other day, and have been playing ever since. I decided to try some new things I've never tried before. Here are a couple experiments I've been doing.
BTW, I know there are some pretty good photographers on this site (SeaEsta, SSNLO, etc), and was wondering if there's any interest in a Photography sub-forum where we can post non-boating pics, talk about cameras, technique etc. Any interest let me know and I'll make it happen.

Take lots and lots of pictures and find some keepers! :mrgreen:
Smart ass answer, but also the truth. This is just a shot of an incense stick and the smoke against a black backdrop. I just fire away when the smoke looks cool. So far, the rose is the only one that really "looks" like anything, the rest are just cool patterns.

Well Canon of course! :mrgreen:
Kidding, well not really, I do shoot Canon, upgraded from the 5D to the 5DMarkii. My original DSLR was the Canon D30 - a whopping 3 megapixels back in the day, and that was just crazy at the time, the 5DMii is 21.8 megapixels!
The real reason I shoot Canon is that I shot Canon when I used to use film, and it made no sense to buy all new lenses when digital DSLR's came out. Anyone who thinks that Nikon is superior to Canon or vice versa are the same people that will argue which boat brand is better all day. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, just depends on what you want your camera to do.

Single off shoe flash 90 degrees from camera across smoke. Manual mode on the flash turned down to about 1/2 power and then zoomed the flash to 105mm to focus it a little. I need to put a white card on the other side of the flash to bounce the light back, or in a perfect world, buy another off shoe and light from both sides. Its only money right? :mrgreen:

:roll::roll::roll:
If you are a true photographer than the brand you use really doesn't come into play. It's the eye behind the camera that composes the shot and makes it happen.
Both camera's take great photo's! Both have there strong and weak points. I'm a Nikon shooter. As Jeff, I shot Nikon film and Minolta prior to Nikon. I had AIS lenses that worked with my D80 so why spend more dollars on lenses when I already had them.
I will say if you are new and looking to purchase you will probably find Canon less expensive to purchase than Nikon. Reason, Canon has a big umbrella. They are not just a camera company. Nikon is a much smaller company and doesn't have all the other divisions. Nikon is known for its optics and that is what you are paying for. Now unless your a pixel peeper, you probably wont see the difference.
Lastly, it's just not the photo. You've got to post-process your photo's and know the software you are using. Most will not get that stellar photo straight out of the camera.
Hope that helps :-)

DJ, Are you using eTTL? I use either CLS or Radio Poppers for off camera lighting.

Depends, when I'm shooting macro, I still use ETTL on a camera bracket, but I also ordered a cheapo radio popper. Waiting for it to get here from Hong Kong :mrgreen: I bought a similiar setup for my studio lights and it works pretty will considering it was less than $25. I would love a Pocket Wizard but can't justfify the expense.
What type of radio popper are you using?
I'm not familiar with what CLS stands for.

CLS is Nikon's Creative Lighting System. It works great but is IR so it's kind of hard to use outdoors unless working close and it doesn't have the distance. I use the RP JrX's. Right now I have a transmitter and 3 receivers.
