Hello MWBP,
Sorry in advance for lengthy post, but got a lot of questions for you because no one in my group (including me) has ever been to the Shootout, or even LOTO for that matter. Group of six coming from Lake Cumberland (KY) only to watch the Shootout (not running in it). Really looking forward to this trip - been planning it since February and gearin' up all summer for it. We have reservations to stay at Summerset Inn (MM 19) from Thursday to Sunday - lodging location may be relevant when answering some of these questions. So here goes with the questions - feel free to answer all of them, some of them, or just one at a time. Any and all help is greatly appreciated, and look forward to maybe meeting some of you on the water.
-Seems like all maps/directions reference a mile marker (MM), so are the mile markers designated somehow on the water, and how do you know what MM you are at when you are on the lake?
-What's the best place to tie up for watching the Shootout (i.e. beginning, middle, or end of course)?
-How early should we get out to the course to get a prime viewing spot (as close to the course as possible), on both Saturday and Sunday?
-During the Shootout, is information (i.e. class, speed, boat names, etc.) broadcast on an FM/AM radio station or marine radio channel so we can keep up with what's going on?
-At Captain Ron's, will there be wet pits or dry pits that we can walk through to check out the hardware?
-During Shootout weekend, can you even get into Captain Ron's if you are coming by water (and don't have a slip reserved)?
-What is the lake itself like (i.e. rock bottom, mud bottom, mostly deep, mostly shallow, coves, main channel, etc.)?
-Any major/unusual hazards you would advise a boater who is new to LOTO?
-What are the best bars on the lake to check out during Shootout weekend?
-How late are the bars typically open on the weekend?
-Are there taxis or shuttles available at night so we don't have to drive a car?
-What restaurants on the lake do we want to go eat at?
-How is Water Patrol - both out on the main lake, and in the Party Cove area?
-Will cups and koozies keep us out of trouble (assuming we are not acting like complete idiots drawing attention)?
-Regarding the Summerset Inn, any info about it or tips regarding staying there if you are familiar with the place?
-In terms of launching, would the Pa He Tsi Access (Public Beach #2) in Osage Beach Lake of the Ozarks State Park be a good choice for us to put in a 33 Outlaw and leave truck/trailer for a few days?
-Is there a noise ordinance for boats? If so, what do we need to do or not do (never boated anywhere that had one) to stay out of trouble?
Thanks again for your help!

-Seems like all maps/directions reference a mile marker (MM), so are the mile markers designated somehow on the water, and how do you know what MM you are at when you are on the lake? They are marked, but kind of hard to see the signs. Get a map or bring a garmin that has the mile markers on it. Garmin is best for night boating.
-What's the best place to tie up for watching the Shootout (i.e. beginning, middle, or end of course)? Depends what you want to see, we tend to tie up twords the end because we are late.
-How early should we get out to the course to get a prime viewing spot (as close to the course as possible), on both Saturday and Sunday? I'd say around 10:00 a.m. you should be able to park where you want.
-During the Shootout, is information (i.e. class, speed, boat names, etc.) broadcast on an FM/AM radio station or marine radio channel so we can keep up with what's going on? Yes
-At Captain Ron's, will there be wet pits or dry pits that we can walk through to check out the hardware? Yes

This year they are not going to sell all the slips.
-What is the lake itself like (i.e. rock bottom, mud bottom, mostly deep, mostly shallow, coves, main channel, etc.)? Pretty deep, mixture of rock and mud.
-Any major/unusual hazards you would advise a boater who is new to LOTO? As long as we don't have rain it should be pretty clear.
-What are the best bars on the lake to check out during Shootout weekend?
-How late are the bars typically open on the weekend? 1:00 a.m.
-Are there taxis or shuttles available at night so we don't have to drive a car? Cabs, but close to 1:00 a.m. they are hard to come by.
-What restaurants on the lake do we want to go eat at? Shorty Pants, Dog Days and Back Water Jacks
-How is Water Patrol - both out on the main lake, and in the Party Cove area? The driver shouldn't be drunk and you will not have a problem if he/she is they go to jail and it cost $500 to get them out
-Will cups and koozies keep us out of trouble (assuming we are not acting like complete idiots drawing attention)? No need, other than to keep the beer cold [smilie=trink39]
-Regarding the Summerset Inn, any info about it or tips regarding staying there if you are familiar with the place? No idea
-In terms of launching, would the Pa He Tsi Access (Public Beach #2) in Osage Beach Lake of the Ozarks State Park be a good choice for us to put in a 33 Outlaw and leave truck/trailer for a few days? Yes that will be fine.
-Is there a noise ordinance for boats? If so, what do we need to do or not do (never boated anywhere that had one) to stay out of trouble? Yes 89 db the 33 shouldn't be a problem

Welcome to Lake of the Ozarks! We hope you enjoy your time here! Our Group generally makes the annual trip to the Lake Cumberland Poker Run every year and stay on the house boats at State Dock Marina. There will also be a Poker Run the Friday before the Shoot Out if you are going to be in town. I believe you can find more information on this at the www.lakeoftheozarksshootout.org

I hope that you have ag reat time at Lake of the Ozarks. the Shootout is typically a great weekend.
Eddie pretty well summed it up, but I would add a few things:
30 mph at night, not 1 mph over. Even if you are sober, it can be a hassle.
Never, never, never, let anybody sit on your engine cover or sunpad unless you are totally anchored, even in the no wake zone heading back to Party Cove and in Party Cove. I think that it is the #1 reason for folks being pulled over.
Pay attention to your exhaust. If you can close it when leaving the bars at night, I think that you are better off. No since in drawing attention to yourself. I don't have a loud boat but I understand that the Water Patrol is enforcing some of the noise laws.
I'd suggest PB2 over Pa He Tsi. The are within a stones throw in the same State Park, but Pa He Tsi is right on the lake so it can be rough. PB2 is protected, there is a store for incidentals, and they have a gas dock. By boat they are about 30 second apart from each other.
Keep this website bookmarked. If you need anything when at the lake, post it on the site and somebody will probably be able to help.
Like I say, have a great weekend and enjoy the Shootout!

We are planning on alot of "New Boats' that have not typically been to the shootout , to participate this year.
I have made calls to many racers in the OSS and OPA circut to bring there water crafts, and last week at the St Clair Offshore Race there was a tremendous amount of enthusiasm for the shootout
August Powerboat has a full preview section about the shootout for 2009
I think this will also help
Have a great week of safe boating

Hey Doc, like the "new" boat.
best year we had was 3 years ago when a bunch of the OSS group showed, lots of fast cats, Haggans 3 team Gieco group, Ken Warby, Steve Stepp, Teague, Dave Scott, Callan & Cosker, Speed Racer, D&M..I don't know if we ever have a year like that again!
Going to get Reggie in the boat this year? Sorry we blew it up before he could get in it. See you in about 3 weeks.

Mike
Reggie and Brian Forehand "borrowed' the Saratoga Stampede a couple weeks ago for the 'Jamin on the James" Poker Run. I saw a video,, looked like a great time. I am not sure if Reggie is going to come to the LOTO shootout or not?
I will never forget the ride we got the boat chime walking in a mile,, I have tried to reproduce that experience in the mile a number of times and have been unsuccessful
I recall that time when we had all that "adrenaline" at the shootout
I have personally spent weeks calling some of the big race teams to make the journey to the shootout this year,,, I hope this adds some new "talent" to the weekend
I have also helped put together the August Edition of Powerboat Magazine, and this year there will be a "preview" to promote the LOTO shootout, instead of post event coverage
If the weather co-operates,, we have all the ingredients for a great weekend,
Did you get an invite to the Taste of Torque on Friday the 28th?

Team CRC was also there that year and they did several runs.
Excellent advice given so far.
The only thing I might add, is bring
plenty of anchor rope....as I recall, it
still plenty deep there ( I'm thinking
60')
And it gets pretty rough after every
one decides to leaves, so be prepared to spend
some time in the air:mrgreen:
If that's not your thing, you may want to wait
an hour or so til it calms down a bit.

I think that it would be a great view, and you would have one of the best seats in the house. Being anywhere on the lake during the shootout is a great idea!

We did the Celebration new years cruise last year. Really nice boat, they have a nice patio on the back pretty high up in the air. Should be a good view of the course from there.

Another cool thing about the Celebration. I believe you will be able to go back and forth from it to Rons on a fairly regular basis if you want to.

WANNA RACE?
Running fast in a straight line is fun but running side by side around a five mile race course takes the fun factor to a whole new level. Offshore Racing is the most fun you can have with your clothes on!
Join the Offshore Super Series as they bring their National Championship Race to Lake of the Ozarks on September 25 – 27 at the Horny Toad. OSS offers bracket class racing for boats that range between 65 and 95 miles per hour. Speeds are based on average lap speed which is generally 10 miles per hour below a boat’s absolute top speed.
There are four OSS Pro/Am – Bracket speed classes for any performance boat capable of running 65, 75, 85 and 95 miles per hour. Boats that are faster than 95 MPH must have canopies and all race safety gear. Life jacket and helmets are required, along with kill switches and outdrive tie bars for all Pro/Am classes. See the complete rules at www.offshoresuperseries.com/racers.cfm
The entry fee for Pro/Am Class racing is just $250.
Be a part of the action and call OSS at 732-552-0669.
