Finally caught a decent one. Mostly crappie fish, but this year I've been trying to get a decent cat also, but without much luck. I've tried everything...dough bait, bluegills, bluegill heads, nightcrawlers, shrimp....but the only ones I caught were by accident when crappie fishing with a minnow. Then I tried a hot dog piece. She was a little over 5 lbs. Lets see if I can get anymore now.

My brother-in-law was down a couple weeks ago and said he was catching a bunch of catfish near the 3.5mm off the dock, with the largest being 15-20#.

I would also like to get better at the catfish at the lake. We used a guide for spoonbilling in the spring, and he mainly catfish guides in the upper milemarkers. He says the only bait to use is live shad. Everytime we have used live shad we have had great luck, but you cannot buy them, you have to use a throw net, and then try to keep them alive (good areator). I have had decent luck in throwing the net around the docks, but the guys that throw them at the dam catch tons of shad.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Wife mainly uses liver, some shad on the trotline, but with liver she catches the hell out of them, Memorial Day weekend on Sunday morning in 5 hrs, her and one other caught 52, smallest around 4lb, largest around 15.....

Been catching alot of them off the dock at the 10 mm with doughbait. Treble hook on the bottom with a bobber with just enough slack to let them play with the bait for awhile. Most ive caught are the 7-15 lb range channel and blue cat.

do you have to find a school of shad and then use a throw net or do you do it blind off the dock to catch them

I must be an idiot (no comment please) or there's not many cats around my dock.....or you guys are telling a bunch of "fishing stories". I never have to worry about hitting my limit!.....it's probably operator error:oops:

Last time down I took my 5 yr. old grandson down to the dock to catch some blue gills. After a few blue gills a cat hit the line and scared the crap out of the little guy, we got it close it enough to the dock to see it was a 4 - 5 lb.er but the line was just to light and it broke away. The bait you ask? A dough ball made out of a left over subway sandwich.

Up here just east of Jeff city my father-in-law and some good friends of mine trout line in the Missouri river.
They always have the best catch when the river is rising using live goldfish.
I have a picture of all three of them from I think "1997" holding up a 97# Blue cat.
They released it back in the river.
The gentlemens agreement around here is the local river fishermen want to break a state record, and if one is caught over 60# to throw it back to let it grow.
I think the state record may be 119# for a Blue.

They had a fish fry last weekend and fed almost a hundred people with two big deep fryers going. One for fish and one for frog legs.

THESE GUYS KNOW HOW TO CLEAN AND FRY FISH.

When I went back Sunday to help clean up, they still had a big cooler of uncooked fish that they were giving away to anyone who helped clean up.
I do have to say that it was last years catch and they needed room for this years catch. Hence the fry.

Most the bait shops around here sell goldfish.
