What is the differance between a labbbed prop and a new out of the box?

What sort of performance differance can one expect?

What is the price differance?

Learning something new everyday........

probably forgetting two things for every one I learn........

from what i know the prop is balanced and the edges are thinned which makes them easier to chip but also adds around 3 mph. cost i dont know.

It is the thinning and sharpening of the prop. They will also adjust each blade to have the correct pitch. Normally around $75 to $100 per blade. Cool Breeze on 54 does a good job with props.

I believe that the above answers are partially correct. That is part the process used to lab a prop. To my understanding the labbing process is to fine tune a prop to a specific application. Labbing can be used to increase or decrease RPM at the desired pitch. It can also be tweaked to give more bow or stern lift and to reduce blowout under different conditions. When I had my props labbed I made many test runs and made notes of what the props did in their stock condition. After many very lengthy conversations with the person who labbed my props we discussed what my goals were and how he would achieve them. For me I reduced some of the blowout on take off and picked up over 3 MPH. Just because a propped is labbed doesn't necessarily make it better for any given application. In other words a truely labbed prop from one boat won't necessarily have the same effects on a different boat.

Ditto on what JMS said.

There is also standard Merc Lab finishing that you can order through any Merc dealer.

I just had mine done at BBlades and can't wait to test them out. I gave Brett all my specs and what I thought and he did the rest. Cost without my gift cert would have been about $100 blade.

When I first started Labbing props while at Mercury Racing, there was basically one template for each propeller. We were really the only rntity that performed the service. In fact, my mentor, Dennis Cavanaugh had invented the procedure.

Today we have learned many new and additional things. Lab Finishing is blue printing the propeller on steroids. The process involves matching all the blades to a specific recipe we determine per the customers goals and the boats actual current performance data.

Call us and we can explain in detail what can be done tour specific application.

The fact that you worked for Merc Racing is very cool, and looks great on a resume.
But the fact that you learned from, trained by, worked with Dennis Cavanaugh... now That's Impressive! [smilie=trink39]
For those of you that don't know the name, if Dennis touched it, it Ran!
