View Full Version : Question for car audio geeks
I bought a flat screen TV and they gave me another 10" tv free. I dont know what to do with it so I am thinking about installing it in a tractor/combine. What do I need??? The cord is confusing me, it says it needs a 3amp DC, is that a generic cord??? The thing has an AC plug that converts it to DC power now. Do all 3amp cords measure the same diameter where it goes in the back of the TV???
Then what do I do for an antenna??? I just want free channels. Do I need an amplifier with an antenna??? Will I be able to get enough reception to make it worth it????
Confused in Iowa..............

If it is a round power input, not all of those are the same. There are different outer & inner diameters. On one of our portable dvd players, the cord got lost. We bought a new one at walmart & it had like 5-6 input adapters. You could also set the volts.

does it have a standard coax input? If so, the antenna you buy may not do well while moving. Here is an example of a mobile tv antenna http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_3080_Audiobahn+AVA10Q.html
it supports diversity to do better job of keeping signal while moving.
But if you are using it in middle of IA, not sure how much signal you will get.

Get me the manufacturer and model number off of the TV and I can research what you will need for power and the antenna.

He is probably one of those poor farmers that have GPS steering and just takes a nap until the field is done!

We do have GPS steering in two of our planters:oops:
It is not really nap time but I do have some extra time to look around.....
The TV is a COBY 10.2" TFT LCD TV

Looks like its 12v. So we just hook it to a 12v source of at least three amps(if thats what the PS says on it) and it will fire. But does it have a hdtv tuner? If not you will need a converter box. The artec t3ap-ls will work on 12v. As for the dc connector, there are several different sizes. Radio Shack carries most of them. I have done some testing on hdtv in a mobile environment. My findings have not been promising. When stopped the picture is perfect. Once moving the signal lock degrades quickly and becomes pixelated (don't know if thats a word). I have tried several different antenna's. Some work better then others, but once moving all have the same effect.

yeah, i was wondering how it would handle movement. out of curiosity, w/ your findings, how fast were you moving?

I run around 5.5 MPH in the planter and between 4 to 4.5 in the harvester...If that matters.

It seem like any movement effects the picture. Just backing out of the driveway made it not viewable. The picture doesn't get fuzzy like with analog tv. It reminds me of satellite tv in bad weather. Cut in and out completely.

That's digitizing....the little square boxes in the picture, Adam you might find it's going to take more time and money than it's worth. I know there is mobile dish and even sirius/xm is getting into the mobile tv game however they are paytv options.
I'm a Dish Network retailer and my advice would be hurry up with planting and get back in your boat.

Adam
The TV has the correct input to receive the digital HDTV over the air stations. Not much information on the internet for the unit but it does look like it takes a 12vdc input. If you look at the wall plug-in AC adapter it should give the DC output voltage. It may also show the polarity of the plug that goes into the TV. You could cut the cord and wire it directly to the 12vdc in the tractor. Radio Shack or car audio shops sell mobile TV antennas. They go for around $30. The reception could come and go as the tractor turns or depending where you are at.
