View Full Version : Question about buying an amp

I have a novice question about buying an amp. I want to move the box out of my car into the boat. The box has a pair of 10's and two pairs of speaker inputs on it. Its powered by an MTX amp. I want to move the box but leave the amp so at the end of the summer I can move the box back into my car.

Will an Alpine PDX 1.600 amp work in the boat? Its a single channel amp but there are two pairs of hookups on the box. How/will the 1.600 amp work with my current box? My intention is that next year I can buy a separate set of subs for the boat.

Stupid question, I know. I just want to sound like I know what I'm talking about when I take my equipment into a stereo shop to get it installed.

I'm not an expert and I'm guessing if somebody see's this post they will know exactly. i'm working on speakers in my boat as well.

From what I understand your box has two inputs one for each speaker. Each speaker is probably 4 ohm and the mono amp is probably 2 ohm which means you could run both subs paralell which would work great.

I would find a stereo shop you don't like and go in there and ask their opinion then shop around a little bit. I plan on running a 5 channel amp with the first four channels running the four speakers in the boat and the four wakeboard speakers leaving the final channel to run the subs.

the pdx will put out 600w in both 2 & 4 ohms. so the question comes down to the specs on your subs. they are probably 4 ohms, which when connected to the amp will create an internal parallel circuit for a 2 ohm load. u need to verify how much power the subs can handle.

Right....it will half the resistance which will double the current going through the voice coils. Make sure the subs can handle it.....or just don't turn it up all the way. Ha!

Thanks guys. I will have to look closer at the subs. I know they are polks that have performed well for me a few years but I will report back after I know the specs of the subs.

You also need to see if the subs are Single Voice Coil, or Dual Voice Coil.

This will come into play when figuring the ohm loads, etc.

The PDX 1.600 should work fine. Mosty likely the are 4 ohm subs with dual voice coils. You can adjust the gain for what the speakers can handle. You could also get a PDX 4.150 and bridge it into 2 channels.

Thanks Griff. I appreciate it. Whats the worst that could happen? I have to buy new, bigger subs?

Worst that could happen? You could fry the new amp, or the subs, or just not get what you're looking for in terms of sound (meaning the subs wouldn't perform as well as they could).

Do not run the PDXs at anything lower than 4ohms on the subs, I learned from experience that during extended playing the amps will go into protection mode  i deduced that it was from the voltage drops during the transients in the music that was pissing the amp off. Once I swapped the 12"s our for dual 2ohms from the dual 4ohms the amps are happy all day long and will play as long I want them to. I do have one of my 4.150s running at 2ohms on one side of the amp and it runs noticably warmer than the other 4.150s.

If you are already losing the subs from car to boat, why not make the little extra effort to move the amp too?
Its only four mounting screws.

Assuming the amp output is already matched to the subs capability why mess with the set up for a one year deal?

We have limited info to recomend whether the PDX you have in mind is even a good power match for the current subs.
On top of that, you say you will maybe look at permanent subs for the boat next year. Why restrict new subs to that amp?

If you dont get new subs, you now have the sunk cost of a nice amp sitting in the boat.
From one "gheto sub box" guy to another, the lows will round out your music experience and you will prob want more [smilie=crazy]

You might also take a minute to fill out your profile "ride" info, it is helpful as people make recomendations. S0 what, if its a 19' bayliner or a 50' Fountain, you are on the water and that leaves 90% of the people standing on the shore wishing they had a boat [smilie=042.gif]

I too would say to try and get seperate setups for the boat and the car. I think you are going to be frustrated trying to have a dual purpose setup in the long run. A buddy of mine just got a PDX amp but he doesnt have it setup just yet. From what I hear, there are good equipment and some of the most efficient on the market today. I have no personal experience with them though.

Let me chime in a little bit here...

I just had 2 custom boxes made to fit under my rear bench on either side of the cooler. I was able to get 2 JL 10W3's under there. They need .65 Cuft of room, and the guy that did the install said they are .63. Still have room to spare. They are downfiring subs and he vented each side of the bench seat base. It sounds pretty damn good, and looks pretty decent.
