Thanks guys - I already checked out E-Bay to no avail - it would be GREAT to find one here in Omaha/CB - we advertised one last year on our website OmahaRiverFront.com (Of all things!) - Talk about a boneyard - Sandpiper Marina has a bunch of Carver Mariners right there in the parking lot all summer...PART$
Gotta keep looking - need to get it fixed for the Annual Missouri Rive HIGH SANDS Labor Day Beach Party!! -Reg

Yes - I've changed the packing on the V-Drive shafts. It's quite a shitty job unless you're a skinny shit. The material I got from a speed shop next to Woodhouse in Blair. (Did it at Cottonwood Marina) Turns out the packing material (a woven, rope-like parifin based material) had to be cut in 1.5" strips and packed back into the stuffing collar, one layer ontop another, (*Ofsetting* each layer's open ends just like new ring sets on a piston) - I used 3 layers - That's all that was needed.
The tough part is getting access to the stuffing box collar - remove the OLD stuffing with a set of offset scribe tools. The sharp-pointed ends will dig, grab & extract the old material and the OFFSET, or "curved" ends will allow penetration deep into the collar ring, which the prop shaft passes through.

Hope this helps. What boat are you working on & where are you?

A good transmission shop can rebuild a Velvet Drive for less than a new one.
As for the stuffing box, West Marine usually has a stuffing box wrench. If there is enough room you can get a big waterpump pliers on the gland nut. You need to find out what size packing your particular stuffingbox / shaft requires. There are several different thicknesses. If you can't find out, take the old packing out and measure it. I've seen a tool that looks like a long skinny corkscrew so you can basically screw it into the packing and pull it out.
You'll probably need a couple of layers of packing. Your stuffing box is supposed to drip. The water keeps the shaft and packing cool. A rule of thumb is one drip every 15-20 seconds. Obviously you need to check the drip rate with the boat in the water with the shaft turning. Its not as complicated as it sounds.

I trashed a Velvet Drive last year on the Gibson. We got caught in a storm with very high winds, and I must have speed shifted. I found a source that I purchased a rebuilt unit from that was like $750.00. I believe that it was out of Ohio. If interested, I can do some snooping back to see who it was from. The mechanic charged me another $300 to install it. It was much less that the original estimate of $3800 with a new one.
What are the numbers and ratio on it?

i was wondering i found some stuff and some ppl posted to me about the procedures so i got a good idea. Anyone know what size off hand the flax is for a 33' carver Mariner 1977?? off hand lol... also would or should i use the NO DRIP flax which is more expensive and lasts longer or just do it every 1 or 2 years?

Thank you, Tango!! - Yep, I'm familiar with the Older Gibson houseboats, as I have worked on the 40' 'R Pamelia' at Sandpiper Marina, MM618 (Missour R.) - Here's the info from the TAG on the bad starboard V-Drive:
MFR INFO FROM STARBOARD V-DRIVE:
================================
MFR: WALTERS
MODEL: RV-20D
SN: 34206
RATIO: 1.46-1
I'm also informed that a Walters RV-26 is a modern replacement. $750 is a GREAT price, and YES - if you could find out who the Ohio company was you purchased yours from, I'd much appreciate it!

Nancy and I would definitely like to have a back-up plan to fully repair the boat if it does'nt sell. All we need is for somebody to buy & open Cottonwood Marina (MM561.5) because that is where our boat is stored. There are NO slips available in Omaha, as both public marinas are FULL. I've lowered the asking price of the boat to a lot lower than it's worth as an incentive to sell, but I know a lot of people won't buy a boat like this that needs this kind of major repair. (Unless they WANT this specific boat and see the VALUE, and will get the work done) That Carver Mariner is a CLASSIC!
Thanks for all your help guys!!! - Regis

Mr. RIGHT - Good for you!
A 33 Carver Mariner - Do you keep it at Dodge Park or Sandpiper & what is the NAME of your boat?
With the snow coming down today, it seems a long ways off till boating BUT the Corps has now begun releasing water from Gavins Point dam & according to the river gages on onahariverfront.com, there is RIGHT NOW an 8-foot wall of water heading downriver somewhere between Decatur and Blair!!

im out a woodland marina in St. Charles MO 222 mm mississippi. DOnt have the name on the boat yet but will have it next weekend.
its called
Clinton's Carver
ONly reason is because of how much i wanted it to be MINE. and i got it thru sheer luck and oppertunity. but documenting it was fast and right around the corner couldnt think of anything else to name it.. Yap, hopefully be on the water in a couple weeks. CANT WAIT!
