View Full Version : Buffing Compounds???????
As soon as I get the ambition to pull the cover and pull it to my buddy's shop I am going to do my bi-annual thoruogh buff/polish on my boat. I have always had good luck with wet sanding any really bad spots, go over the whole boat with 3M Heavy Duty Rubbing Compund and then follow up with 3M Finesse It II, using a high speed buffer of course and a coat of Mequires Premium Flagship Marine Wax by hand. Has anyone else found any other products that work as well or better? Just curious to see how others do it.

i use Finesse It II w/ a buffer then follow up with Maguires Gold Class. i'll also use Maguires Clean Wax a few times throughout the season followed by Gold Class.

Is Gold Class a marine wax. I was told by a gelcoat repair person that automotive grade wax will yellow white gelcoat over time.

no, it is not a marine wax. i don't know the difference between a marine wax and an automotive wax. i can't see there being very much difference. i know a lot of people that use automotive waxes on their gelcoat. in my case, i'm not too worried about it since my boat is painted with Imron.

Damn Chad! That thing is ugly! It is a good thing you have a hot woman to be on board so that people will even look in your direction!! ;)
Very Nice!
I too have used an Auto wax and I have never seen a problem either.
ps, Yes I was that boy that had to wear a bone around my neck just for the family dog to play with me, so I know how to get others to do the same!!
I honestly can't see there being a differnce either, I just heard that somewhere.

Geographics had a big thread on Offshoreonly. They really recommend Aqua Buff for faded gelcoats. They claim it is easier and works better than the 3m finese. I bought some to try on my faded boat but decided to have it painted instead.

The aqua buff is an incredible product. Debbie used it on an old 86 Donzi Minx we bought. I couldn't believe how much it brought the shine out on the old faded blue gelcoat. The blue takes a beating in the Florida sun.
She loved the new buffer I bought her!
Here she is acting like she's doing all the work. Heck, I got on the internet and ordered the aqua buff for her! ;)

Cuda,
Now will the Aqua Buff I bought be ok to use on the new paint job?
JimmyBaja
A new paint should need any compounding. Just hit it with some Meguires #56 wax.

Mequires #56? Is that the wax of choice?
Thanks, JimmyBaja
According to Debbie it is.

I could probably use some on my deck on the 25 OL - where did you get it Jimmy?
Eddie, there is a link above to order it. It comes in two grits, the 1000 and 2000. If it's pretty oxidized, start with the 1000 then go to 2000. If it's not bad, just use the 2000.
Do you use a wool pad for both or a foam for the 2000 maybe? I think I will buy both. How far does it go?
Deb said with the 2000 use the synthetic and the wool with the 1000.

Eddie-
I have some that I bought. You can try it out and let me know how it works. I bought it from the manufacturer.
Let me know when you want to try it.

You won't need Aqua Buff on a new paint job. It's for oxidation removal. You can sometimes find it at marine stores. If not, check out their website at www.aquabuff.com. It's great stuff.

I've been told that too. Something to do with gel coat being more porus which allows the wax to permiate the gel. Once it's in there' there is no way to get it back out and once it yellows you're stuck with it. This all second hand info.

You cannot beat Meguiars products and they sell a kit at Boaters world. However I recomend 3m finess it II , I think it is 3000 grit.
I use meguiars on all 3 vettes and got best paint at the 50th anniversary kickoff party with the 99 Coupe. Meguiars gold class. It is the best topcoat. It is also very easy to use and when doing the .38 Special I am GLAD! it is.
I recently ordered aqua-buff 1000 & 2000 as well as Frenzy wax from Speedwake. I'll post results in a couple weeks. I am going to try it first on a buddy's 25 Donzi, red and faded pretty bad. He's willing to pay me to do his so I guess he is the guinea pig.

Brian your right, also never use yellow compound on white gelcoat for the same reason [smilie=011.gif]
Do you guys use your polishers with 1000 grit compound?!? I always use heavy stuff by hand and buff with the lighter stuff, of course wax by hand also.
I'll be posting a bunch of polishing pads in classifieds soon.....

I tried the Frenzy wax from Speedwake on my son's red VW before trying it on the boat. It did everything they say. Brought the shine back like it was new.

Kim, Can you tell me how it is applied and what to expect from it? I am told it will stop the hull from discoloring in water?
Thanks, Jim

Jim,
Nothing will STOP discoloration altogether. There are many variables to consider, such as how long the boat sits in the water, type of water, age and condition of boat, etc.
However, Fountain Powerboats has tested the Teflon/Wax combo and had great results. You apply the Teflon with a high speed buffer (about 1200 rpm). Allow to "cure" for 24 to 48 hours. Apply Waxing Frenzy. This provides sort of a "double barrier". Not necessry if you keep your boat out of the water and wax it frequently.

My boat only sits in the water for one night then gets pulled and cleaned. The water here on the upper miss is scummy! So we always have a yellow stain that has to be scrubbed off even after a day. Will this product help with that. Or will just using Frenzy wax do the trick. I've found it easy to scrub the boat where it's been waxed(sides). But I don't wax the bottom(should I?) and it's a real pain to clean. Over the summer is discolors and I have to us a harsh hull cleaner to get the bottom clean again. Thanks for the help.

Kim, I have the same issue as Caincando1. My bottom hull turns brown in a couple hours after getting wet. The boat is on the lift all week. I am looking for something to put on that will stop this from happening. I hate cleaning the hull. Your thoughts?

So has anyone taken the plunge and tried Frenzy Wax yet? If so let us know how it works. My order is on its way, and if ASH ever fixes that thingy in the engine thingy that broke, I'll get my boat back and wax on wax off and let you know how it goes.
