I have an 18' Caravelle with a V-6 that weighs in around 2500 lbs. The trailer came without brakes and even with my Avalanche, it is sometimes difficult to slow down. Wondering if anyone has ever installed a surge brake kit with disc brakes? On a scale from 1 - 10, ten being the hardest, where would you rank it? I feel I understand the concept enough to install it, but is it something that takes a weekend, a week? Thanks.

Once you add a trailer and gear to that 2500 your probably looking at 4000lbs. I can't believe your Avalanche has a hard time stopping it. My boat weighs more than that and I have no trailer brakes and I've never had any problems stopping it with any of my vehicles. Not that trailer brakes aren't a good idea.

I wouldn't think you would have to have brakes with that. Probably would be nice and give your truck brakes a longer life. I pull a 27' Baja and my surge brakes are out right now (previous owner neglect) and I can stop pretty quickly. In an emergency, probably have an issue, that is why I am not doing much towing until it is fixed. I pull with a FS bronco.
