View Full Version : 38 Special Stereo Project underway

Christian

Well started tearing the 38 down last week and we have made good progress so far

We have all the speaker holes cut, all the speaker wires run, the power wires run, the batteries and battery trays bought and ready to install and the sub box is underway.

We ended up going with 7 Alpine PDX amps, 4 x 1.1000 and 3 x 4.150, 7 pairs of Memphis 8" coaxs, and a pair of 6.5s (just to fill a hole), 4 x Diamond 12" subs in a custom box where the side storage box used to be.

I am going with the MB Quart marine DVD/iPod system for head unit and are doing monitors in the backs of the sat head rests for the video out for the music videos

it ought to be comparable to the stereo in PQ when it is all said and done, I hope

here are a few shots and I will post more as we get them

How are the amps supported when stacked? Are there hex studs that allow you to interconnect each amp to the other?

Cant wait to see the finished product.

Christian, how will you keep all this cool, won/t the amps get to HOT? Guess you are not at Eldorado today

Nice. You guys are nuts. Ive got a bunch of JL Audio subs in my basement from my car audio days that I'd love to put on my boat, but I'm too afraid it would all get stolen.

Sqirril cage fans will circulate the air behind the amps and the A/C will alos be runnign in the cabin so that should help a ton. If necessary I cna duct the A/C to the amp cabinet, I never had much trouble with the PQ stereo thermaling so I should be OK here I think

the amp all stack and are connected together on all four corners and seem very solid. We will brace the amp rack from the top as well, mainly to keep it from tilting

Nope not as ElDo , in the shop working

the boat should be done this week and back on the lift next weekend

I hope so, best we ever did witht he PQ was 141DB at the shootout 2 years ago, I am hoping this one can best that number

The coolest thing is that the rules have changed this year for the stereo shootout and installation counts and everything has to be mounted and can't be a thrown together POS like has happened in the past with peavey stacks etc on a toon with a big ass genny

Looks lilke a great start! [smilie=appl]

Decided on 12" instead of 15" subs?

I know u are going to be working out that genny more but what is your battery line up going to look like pushing that many amps?

Christian
07-29-2008, 09:59 AM
I had to go down to 12's due to airspace. I do have a 50 amp charger for the batteries and am going with 5 group 27 batteries for the stereo. I only had 4 of them dedicated to the stereo in the PQ so i think I should be OK. I alos added a 30 farad cap as well to help with trasnients

How about a pic of the batteries and wiring to them??

I can snap those tonight. I put four more on the drivers side in addtion to the one that is the starting battery and then added an additonal one to the pass side (could not add more, the hot water heater is in the way)

The batteries are all connected via 1/0 and then interconnected with 4ga

I will take some pics tonight and post them up

Paint will happen this winter, still looking at ideas and waiting for Laura's input. I do not know if it will be as wild as the PQ, but who the hell knows

crAAp that did not take long!! I just seen that boat a couple of days ago it seems!!

You know jet airplanes have this little jet engine called an APU they use to power everything while on the ground. Something like that may just come in handy to help power everything. [smilie=crazy]

Good luck with the rest of the install and I am hoping to be able to see the finished product in person.

hello I was wondering if the is like a hole saw that cuts the holes for the 6" speakers? or did you do it freehand

Christian
07-31-2008, 09:45 AM
Nope all the holes were cut with a body saw, it really helps in making the tricky cuts and cuts where you do not have square access to the surface being cut

Well I have 7 total, plus the dedicated one for the genny and the genny runs the 50 amp battery charger, so I think I will make out OK [smilie=crazy]

Nothing like adding another 1000 pounds of useless useless noise making crap to a boat

Yeah, but i didnt get a response from on the one 2br on vrbo, so we are just keeping our unit at the ledges. its close enough i think.

install looks great. looking forward to checking it all out cause i have some questions on your amp/speakers setup.
