View Full Version : Stereo Problem
Here's the problem:
When I crank up the volume it cuts out.
Everyone I've talked too has made some great suggestions but I've tried all of them and it still cuts out when I turn it up loud.
I've replaced the batteries and alternator. I've looked at the wiring and couldn't detect any problems, but I'm far from an electrician. It's been happening for a couple of years now. It's pis*ing me off and I'm tired of messing with it. It's a Clarion Marine with Amp.
Can anyone recommend a good stereo tech/store that will come to my dock and check it out? I'm at the 12mm in Bristol Bay (off HH). Thanks.

When we bought our H2X, the first thing I did was promptly remove the clarion speakers, sub and amp and replace them with something that wasn't poo-poo. If the equipment you are talking about is the same as the factory stuff in the Bajas, spend some $$ and upgrade so you can turn it up.

Do all the speakers cut out, or just the amplified ones?
Sometimes the power supply wiring to the head unit can be too small or shared, and the voltage drop trips the internal protection on the head unit cutting it out.

I agree with 00Crownline, it's either your power wires too small or (like mine) a bad ground. I forgot my ground wire this spring and it would cut out when I turned it up, connected the ground wire and it's fixed.

I had this happen on my first boat. It would frustrate the hell out of me. What I found after many times of trying to figure it out, was 2 fuses in line to the head unit. After a while of play time this would start. After getting pissed off the last time, I started pulling wires out (in the dark) and noticed the two fuses in line. I removed one and everything was great after that. No more problem!
My advice---do it in the light----much easier!

You don't have a large enough guage power wire, ground wire or the speakers are shutting down due to being overloaded.

Big wires and install a big Capacitor between the battery and the radio.
Thanks for all the good advice. I'll try them and respond back.

Amp could be too small for the load also.

That is what I was just going to say.
Some amps have a protective circuit that prevents you from damaging your speakers. The bigger the amp you have the greater capacity speakers you will need. And vis vera, if the amy is too small for the speakers is can not drive them.
Sounds like you may need a new system to do what you really want it for.
Hope this helps and good luck.

I have this same issue and it drives me nuts too. I will cut out when I really turn it up and it will also happen if I hit the tabs at idle also. I was thinking about getting a cap, but did not know if that would solve my problem or not.

Yes, call Justin at Waves and Wheels. I just had him do mine this year and he does a great job.
Sounds like your frustration level is at the point of spending the money to just get it fixed.. I know the feeling!!

Call hitechredneck at 402-616-6985 (B0b) he will give you some ideas.
When you say it's shutting off, is the head unit shutting down or the amp?

I got a feeling yours is a wiring size or ground size issue.
The shutdown sounds like the low voltage protection circuit in the headunit cutting out until the voltage comes back up enough for it to allow power through again.
Run a new ground and power wire up to the headunit from the battery and see what happens. (don't forget to fuse it.)
