I just bought a boat with an HP500 in it. What type of oil should I use? I was thinking Amsoil has a 15-w40 marine/diesel oil or Moibil 1 synthetic. What do you recommend? Where can I get an oil filter? How much oil should this take?

SOme people do run the synthetic oils with no problem and I dont see that there should be...We run a straight weight 40 VR1 Racing oil form Valvoline in all of our stuff but we do run Mobil 1 in the 4 engine cat.

Filters are available at any marina, and you should hold about 8 qts per motor..... add 7 and check it in the water.....
I use Mobile 1 syn. 15/50, and was using Mercury racing filters but just decided to go with the Napa Gold. I cant rember the Napa part # but the Fram # is PH5. The cheepest Merc. was $10.60 and I got the Napa for $3.10. [smilie=657.gif]

I use to run Amsoil. Good stuff! But, I quit using them this summer. Got tired of paying their ridiculous shipping fees. I switched to Mobil 1-15W/50 in the HP500EFI's and Mobil 1-5W/40 (Truck & SUV) for the F-350 6.0 PSD. I can buy it down the street at the local Checker Auto. It is on-sale quite often for $4 a quart. I run the Amsoil Marine with a K&N filter. Seems to work just fine. Also run the Amsoil S2000 Gear lube oil.

I'm using Royal Purple from www.karlsracing.com in the 502 to help reduce oil burn.

I believe the HP500 says 40w on the engine tag. If you got more than 25-50 hours think about running Amsoil 25w-50 or Royal Purple 40w, they're only required to be change once or twice a season depending on their usage. Merc's 25w-40 is only good for around 25 hours, and you'll see your oil pressure dropping after hards run once you get about 10-15 hours on it. Conventional motor oil can handle 5000 rpm's for long periods of time.

Would it be more than 8 quarts with an oil cooler? I have an inline oil cooler.
