Mosi Jr picked up a boat this week. It has a McGuard Lock on the sterndrive for protection.

When Mosi Jr. picked the boat up the guy said he forgot to bring it and would see that he got it to him.....
.
.
.......WELL.................. GRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

He cannot seem to locate it and we would like to do some outdrive work. Any thieves out there who can tell me how to get these things off?

I figured I'd ask here before trying the mfg.

Mosi, I cant tell from the pic, is it a loose ring around it or just a one piece odd shaped nut? I had removed these from car wheels and it usually took a grinder , cheisel, ect. Sometimes a nut can be welded on too.

Weld a Nut/Bolt to the end that is supposed to turn when the key is used, by looking at the picture I would say the center part. Then you can simple use a socket to remove.

Sometimes you can drive a smaller size socket on them to break them loose. When I pulled my 29 back from New York I blew 3 tires and got good at driving sockets on wheel locks which should be similar. Keep us posted because I have those same locks and not sure if I have the keys to them either..

Instead of a smaller socket, try the Craftsman bolt outs. They are similar to a socket except they have tapered spiral blades inside the socket that twist into the nut/lock as you turn loosen the it. The harder you turn, the more bite you get.

The bolt outs will just cut the end off insted of pulling it off, I remove at least on set of these locks every day it seems, i sell wheels and tires, we just take in impact chissel with a small point and on the inside of the nut their are some recesses, you will have to put that point on it and just start to spin it around slowly, its goona take a little bit to get it off but that is going to be your best bet!

I would take your boat to bigo181979 if he is close or to a similar tire/wheel distributor. You do not want to mess up your prop shaft. If they can not get it off I would weld a nut to the lock. Oh yeah after you get it off send the seller a bill.

I've done the same. Worked just fine, but my locks tapered down a little bit on the end, which definitely helped.

Good luck.

I took mine off with an angle grinder and a cutoff wheel, just cut the collar enough where I could get a chisel and BFH in there to split it apart and then vice grips took care of the rest

or just call the maufacturer, give them the numbers on the lock if possible and order a new key.

Take it to a tire store. My guy has a "kit" made by a tool mfg. to get wheel locks off. I've used it before & it works! You can use the lock again too!

Well I will tell a quick story regarding the exact same 'lock'!
One spring trip to Havasu I found out I had a broken motor mount :(
Brough it in, they called and said it would be an extra $75 to remove the lock
I did not have it with! Where was it? Who knows but back in MN in the garage of crap!
Well walking around thier store I found they 'sold' the same locks.
I asked the sales guy if I could open a package to see how it looked/worked on my boat in the driveway.
He said sure just as long as I buy it.
Well I went out to my boat and used the 'borrowed' package and REMOVED MY locks!
So you might want to see if anyone has any 'laying' around!

I no longer use those locks!
