OK,
I have 1-10" Clarion sub(came w/boat)
1-Clarion 500 watt amp(came with boat)
4-6.5" Focal speakers(just installed)

New speakers rock! very clear at high volume they told me with a new amp they would sound even better.

I would like to add 2 new subs and replace 1 old sub, and replace old amp.
if I have the same people do it, I will need to mortgage my home!!

It is not possible for me to do the work myself, because I have no talent, but I can hand tools and fetch like a champ.

Any suggestions on subs? and I am thinking of the Alpine pdx amp(s) how many would I need?

Thanks

I think your clarion amp is only 250 watts rms. Is it the 4/3/2 channel amp??? Is it running all 4 speakers and the sub???

What is the max rms wattage on the Focals????

You could probably use the Clarion amp you have for 2 subs and get a PDX 4.100 for the focals. I just put a pdx 4.100 in my boat. Actual test was 127 watts x 4. My dc gold speakers are 80 watts rms and I only have the gain at about 60%.

As far as subs, you could just get another Clarion 10". If you're running free air and want marine, your options are somehwhat limited. Clarion, Kenwood, JL and maybe a couple more. The JL will be the best, but double the $$$.

Right about the PDX 4.100..... I have one running my 4 Polk MOMO's and it sounds great. If you're adding the other 2 subs (In MHO) is too much, use the pdx 1000's. Unless you're pumping a 50 footer, more than one sub is too much.

Free air subs can only take about 200 watts. I don't think it will be too much with that in mind. If he wanted to put 500 watts a piece to boxed subs, then I'd say it would be too much.

I only did half of my stereo upgrade this year. Next year will be another amp(pdx 4.150) 2 subs(free air) and 2 or 4 more speakers, depending on what speakers I decide to go with. Its 90% wired for it now. I let you judge if its too much next year:mrgreen:

I have a JL freeair sub. I am impressed with the quality without a box. It was the easiest to install. My upgrade needs to be a headunit with an aux input for the mp3 player the transmitter has to go.

I might go with JL subs, but the cost is more than double the Kenwoods and Clarions.

For a head unit upgrade, if it doesn't need to be 100% waterproof, check out the Clarion M475. Its what I just installed. Got it new off ebay for under $150. It has an external aux input as well as every other thing you could possibly need.

I have to jump on the bandwagon here and recommend JL for the subs, especially if you're going free-air. They are more expensive, but worth it in my opinion. Are you set on going with two subs? And which focals do you have (how much power do they handle)? That info will help for the amp decision. Those Alpine amps are really nice, but there are other good options out there too.

Keeping in mind the cost, I would put two JL W3 V3(W6's if you want to spend money) I would take the Clarion sub and give it to someone you don't like very much. As far as the sub's, I would build boxes for them. It will be night and day from free air and you subs will last longer. I have some designs for subs I like depending on the openings you have under your seats. As far as Amps, I too suggest alpine pdx's. You could start with a pdx150.4. Run Ch1 & 2 to the focals and bridge 3/4 for the subs(it might be vica/versa). You be suprised at how well it will sound and pdx's don't use up you battery like a most other amp's. If you want more, then buy a pdx1000.1. Hook that to your sub's and bridge the pdx150 and use it just for the focal's(they can handle, I don't care what the rating say's) PM me if you have any question or need someone to do it.

That's what I get for posting while intoxicated. I don't even think I got the PDX numbers right. As far as too much, you've been hanging around Christian too much.

I like the M475. I am having a hard time knowing what is compatible with my wired remote. It is the oval white one it is not a Sony but controls my Sony. I'm lazy I dont want to replace it.

Only a couple wired remotes will work with it.

cmrc1-sb or cmrc1-bss ......both these have the display screen.
cmrc2 ......these don't have the display screen.

I got a cmrc1-sb off ebay new for $60

What's a ballpark cost for all that?

JL's ftw. Back in High School I had a Calvin piss on Orion sticker on my car back when they were their biggest competition:oops: I think I was one of the first to run the triple w6 combo's in the area. That was almost 15 years ago and those JL's will still pound if I hook them back up.

I used to run 2 12inch JL's in my Grand Cherokee, it used to be like having a back massage. I've now got one of them in the boat and it buuuuuummmmppppppssssssss!!!!!
