My spare wheel looked like that. I tried everything I could find including acetone and couldn't get it clean. Ended up de-mounting the tire and took the rim to a metal polishing co. and they buffed it off.

If the rims are rusted that badly, the plastic coating is gone. In that case, use our Shark Tower! to get them looking good again. Then, use Waxing Frenzy! to maintain and keep them from rusting again.

As you can see in the picture, some of the plastic coating is still there. That's the difficult stuff to get off.
I haven't used Shark tower, but I tried virtually everything else known to man to get the clear coat off without success.
My understanding was that the Shark Tower is a rust remover/cleaner.

Looks like it was a standard chrome rim but, within the past few years, some companies have come up with a clear coat spray system to put on your rims to help "protect" them. Unfortunately, this is what happens to them after a period of time. Unless it's a factory application, the clear coat is not going to stick.
You may be able to get a drummel and compound it off.

I've tried compound and a buffer wheel on a drill, and it doesn't work well.
Any commercial plating co. has large buffers that will cut it off. But it cost me $35 bucks to get it done.
For not much more you can get a new wheel. I had mine buffed because my style of wheel wasn't available any longer.

I had the same rims on my old Baja Trailer, they looked the same way. I took them off the trailer but left the tire mounted, and used paint stripper to remove the clear, also used some fine steel wool and SOS pads to help the srripper work, then went after the rust and waxed them. When we were done they looked great, just had to wax them once in a while to keep the rust away. Don't worry the paint stripper won't hurt the rubber or the plastic rivets. Also you will want to get the kinda stripper you hose off with water. Get some rubber gloves and don't do it in your yard, unless you like brown grass.
