I have a 20ft crownie with a 350 4brl alpha one. I'm looking at a quicksilver ss 23pitch prop. Does anyone know how that combo will work? Will it run at the right rpm? Or is that too much of a pitch for it? I'm still learning, so thanks for the help guys.

Hi Crownie,
Unfortunately I have nothing insightful to offer, but the Throttle Up gang usually comes around and likes to help out our members with prop questions, so check back every once in a while, they're not on every day but when they stop by they give great advice.

What prop do you currently have and what max. RPM are you turning.

Right now I have a ballistic 19pitch. It runs between 4600-4800 rpms wide open.

I run a 21p on my crow 196 runs 4600rpm at 60mph gps [smilie=657.gif] I thik a 23p is a bit tall for your boat. Just my .02

I just got home from the water, I was a little off. It ran wide open at 4400 rpms, 55 mph. I don't know if that makes a difference

Crownie02,

With the 350 Mag you need to run 4600-5000 RPm at WOT. With the 19P Ballistic at 4400, how much trim are you putting into her? What is your fuel amount? What is the condition of your 19P Ballistic. You are running a bit low on RPM and possibly lugging your motor at the 4400.

Julie, thanks for that info. Today I had about a half tank of gas, and when running with the trim a little above 3/4 I was running about 4500 rpms. Is that too low and what should I do to correct it? Thank you.

I almost forgot, the prop is great condition, no imperfections at all.

Josh,

I would like to see you run a higher RPM. Somewhere around 4800 RPM at WOT. I think some prop testing might be helpful. Feel free to call.

Could I just ask what WOT is?

I'm a newbie, and I admit it...

Thanks AMER....Now, I have to ask...at what point is running WOT a bad thing? I can't imagine it's that good for your motor is it?

WOT is never bad, in fact it can be quite fun. Alright, running WOT in a no wake could be bad. And I guess running WOT will docking could be bad. But in general, it gooooood!!!!

As for the motor, it's designed to run to WOT. Running for long periods does create some additional wear and tear, but last I knew, it's rebuildable and/or replacable.

Play Hard and put it away Wet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The recommended WOT is important to maintain the health of your motor. Most motors have a rev limiter in them to prevent over-reving. Just as important is running to low of an RPM, this is what we call lugging the motor. Ultimately both of these scenerios are not good for the life expectancy of your motors.

Intercepter also has some valid points on WOT!

Julie I started this thread to learn get a little info on my prop choice so here is where I'm at. I was thinking about using a ballistic 17pitch prop, I hear that would gain me the rpms I need, but I assume I would lose the top end speed. Or using a labbed 19pitch ballistic prop and seeing if that would help. What do you think. Also I have a vented prop too, 19pitch ballistic but it makes vibration at certain points in throttle. Why is that?

Thanks

Josh
