View Full Version : Stereo ??- Just plain weird!!

I got the boat out on Saturday and powered on the stereo only to find I was getting no sound. The amps would not power on so I checked every freakin' connection between the stereo and the amps and the amps and the battery and still nothing. We stopped and ate and when we left i turned the lights on and on came the amps. There is no relation between the the light switch and the stereo that I am aware of so I am totally baffled. The amps will power on when I turn the bow and stern lights on but is very distorted coming throught the speakers until I turn the guage panel lights on and then the sound gets better but nowhere near what should sound like. WTF!!

DO you have power and ground at the amps?

Do you have power with the remote turn on lead with the radio on

If any of these answers is no or less thna 12V

then check the connections again with the lights the way you have described and see what changes.

If the voltage chages or appears hen you ahve a bad connections somewhere powering the amps

Sounds like a bad ground line going to the stereo/amps to me. Start from the batts and work your way up. ;)

It is a bad ground when you turn on the lights it is using that circuit and feeding back to make a ground. Voltage drop the ground wires and you should find your problem. You should have less than a 1/2 volt.

I did not get a chance to put the meter to it on Sunday but I think I will find that there is a bad ground somewhere. I hate having an issue and then having to wait an entire week to be able to get back down there an solve it. I appreciate the help.

I was going to ask you how you made out with your electrial issues, but seems like you are still fighting the grimlins.. Dude I feel your pain...

It is a never ending cycle this summer. I wired this stereo up last year and never had one issue and this year has been nothing but problems. You ever get your alternator issue fixed. I was actually going to ask you about your ride, I am looking at a ZT280 and was wonerding how you like your Check. The ZT has some cool lines and a 502 MPI. Let me know.

Yeah got the alt fixed rewired it from the alt to the batteries had 8ga wire and we went to 4ga and made sure all of the connections were good and tight. And replace the new alt that was put on over memorial day weekend but it was under warrnty so that was not bad.

Really like the Check but it is a Convincor and they are a bit of a different boat than the ZT280 so I really can't compare, walked around one at a show acouple of years ago. If you want shoot me a pm and I'll give you some info on them.
