Hi guys,
Hopefully someone can help me out with some advice. I have a 252 Baja Islander - 25 footer. It currently does NOT have trim tabs on it. I was reading somewhere the other day that trim tabs help a lot with porpising. I don't have any trouble getting up on plane (4-5 seconds) but the boat will porpise in rough water at low speed. I'm guessing I'd see some increased performance in my hole shot but what I'm truly interested in is whether low speed porpising is really that much different. What say you oh wise and mighty midwest boaters???

I guess it depends on what you consider low speed. They should help with that
as well as smoothing out some chop while riding. I know that they help a ton
with my boat, but that's apples and oranges. I would suggest K-Planes for a good
name brand. They have worked very well on my friends outlaws. 25' & 33'.
Also, we just added tab indicators to mine which made a world of difference to me.

Thanks for the help! Other comments are welcomed too. I'm just trying to decide if it's worth the $600+ bucks to add them.

I have a 26' boat and I use my tabs more to level out the ride if I have lots of weight on one side of the boat. I probably don't use them as much as I should, but they definitely help keep the bow down when I need to.

I have Phil's (MNOUTLAW) old 25 Outlaw and he drives like a girl. I don't use the tabs unless I want to run slower at night or to even out the side of the boat. Other wise I keep them up, they slow you down.

They will help with the porpising on the 252, I have a buddy that has one.

I agree with BigDaddy96, I use mine more for leveling out but I do use
them to get my top heavy hog up on plane too.

I've got a Baja 235 with factory trim tabs and they do help the porpising. They do slow the boat down but are great for evening the boat out from one side to the other based on load. I've also found that in the chop from LOTO using the tabs to keep the bow down seems to give a much better ride (smoother / not as much bounce).

I would say they are worth the money. just my 2 cents

I guess you could call Gabby the trim indicator [smilie=071.gif]

Ok, to get back to the original question. I have found that in the rough what works best for our boat is alittle bit of trim and a little bit of tab and keep the bow down... In the smooth alot of trim and no tab for best ride.

But ours isn't a race boat by any means.

They stop the porpising (poor pissing) outright and knock down rough water! Beside the comment that I drive like a girl (Thanks Eddie) they can also increase your top speed if you can find the sweet spot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 25 Outlaw comes with Instatrim Dual Ram tabs, available from Overtons, get the trim Indicator also. http://www.overtons.com

K-Plane's would probably put your nose underwater. A liitle large for 25'.

And for leveling the boat keep five cases of beer handy!!! Poor-pissing is from lack of pratice, try it from the swim platform.

I have a 232 Baja with trim tabs. They will help you out, but watch the brand and size you install. Mine were factory and are far more effective at slow speed and to even out the side to side. One problem I encountered was after pro charging the engine, I eneded up installing to large of a prop and it actually was trying to lift the stern out of the water - I'd trim it out and it would lift harder. Finally getting the corrrect prop on the boat made a big difference and really cut down on the use of the tabs. Hope that helps.

Since you like to feed me "grap" about my spelling, what does
"put your nose her underwater" mean? [smilie=265.gif]

I was wondering what the difference is between trim tabs and hydrofoils were.
my first guess is that hydrofoils are for the outboards and trim tabs are more for larger io's

Hydrofoils...like those fins that people put on the outdrive?? Not for performance boats, period. Basically they are creating low speed lift to get the boat out of the water faster. They also produce a lot of drag and change the hydrodynamics of the outdrive which isn't good to do at high speeds.

Trim Tabs are an adjustable extention of the bottom of the boat. They have so many purposes it would take all day list to them.

Yes the type that mount on the out drive. I have a '87 Fouur Winns and it seems to porpoise in the ruff stuff. The old beast isnt that fast either. So im trying to figure out which one would be best for me.

Trim tabs are the way to go. I have an '01 Crownline 262 and it's not fast by
any means but the tabs help a bunch to level it out and to get it on plane faster.
It's slow enough to get on plane with the tabs I bet you could use a sun dial if I
didn't have them.

Well I think you've all convinced me that trim tabs would be a good idea. Now its just a matter of getting the right ones. Has anyone ever installed them on their own? Am I a fool for trying to do it myself or should I have a pro do it?

Glastron Curt really loves to drill holes in boats! [smilie=hump]

They're pretty simple, the hardest thing is running the wires to the console
