What do you guys use to clean them? I've used steel wool and was told that is too harsh.
Any other household items work?
Hell Ya!

Magic eraser and snowbowl Rub very lightly and let the snow bowl do the work. Then rinse and wax.

it is not necessary to scrub hard or use anything harsh...I use CLR bathroom spray in the YELLOW spray bottle and a brush...they come spotless!!!
I tried toilet bowl cleaner once and it was too much...DO NOT USE!!
lime away spray is good for the lower unit...the YELLOW BOTTLE CLR works there too.
GOOD LUCK!

SNO BOL, but do not let it dry on ... and rinse VERY thoroughly or it will tarnish the finish.

good call JJ. I remembered you using this and I picked up a bottle at Lowes for the drives and tips. Seems to work well. I did not use a brush, just had to wipe off and reapply to a couple of stubborn areas. Looks good now :)

Vinegar/water 50/50...once clean polish with Race Glaze.
I will say, my new Hardin Marine tips clean much easier than the original Corsa mufflers. They were a sumbeatch to clean...the Hardin tips clean very easily. Better stainless? polished better?

We have been using "The Works" tub and tile cleaner, comes in the white/green bottle. Works great, wont hurt the fiberglass and cleans all the stainless right up. Once I spay it on, we use a 3m pad (White),which is basically a very light abrasive pad. same as a pan cleaner sponge from home. Wipe it down and rinse it off. Wha-la, Pretty as new....
The best part is the stuff is dirt cheep @ walmart!. Many times it is on sale for less tha $1.50/bottle

I use lime away. I tried to keep them looking good by applying Zoop seal & it lasted about 2 times as long as nothing at all, which was about 10 minutes.

Sorry to kick up an old thread... but this is what my exhaust pipes look like... pretty bad... do you think Muratic acid will give me the results you have or are they too far gone? I would really like to bring them back nice and shiny again... Yours are beautiful.... here is a pic of what I got going on on the new Cig...

Yup, it'll make them look like new if they aren't scratched up. There is still shiney stainless under that hard water.

Zing is Muratic Acid, but without the zing label and price - This will do the trick, it will also take out the brown/yellow if you boat at some of the Oklahoma or Kansas lakes....:)

Thanks guys... I was going to use a rag or course/rough spongue but how concerned do I need to be about hosing them off.... that acid I would think would run all down the outdrives, or oven the back of the transom....
How do I do this safely?
Lakerat
09-05-2007, 05:53 PM
Get a spray bottle, apply it, let is soak, wipe, then rinse......I used to do my transom as well as the drives, same thing - Spray, soak, wipe, rinse - Wear rubber gloves and be ready for the fumes
This sh_t cleans

Cool... I am assuming that I need to be cautious of over spray on the rear transom... Thansk LR!

I think my mufflers are actually stainless though....
Would that be bad to use the acid then?
Sorry to have so many questions on this, just trying to make sure I am being safe with this stuff... both to me and my boat.

All tips are stainless. Give the stuff a try on a small out of the way spot. You cant make them look any worse right?

I have cleaned my tips with acid. Wipe it on, wash it off. I also clean my unpainted aluminum lowers, the braided stainless lines. Everything. The key is to take it off with water QUICKLY. I also have found that Stoner Products, beadmax spray wax keeps the tips looking really good for a LOOOOOOONG time.
I prefer to use CLR or Limeaway, but some lakes are really nasty with hard water & I'm forced to use the Zing/acid.

Ok, so yesterday in between rain storms I busted out the muriatic acid and a couple rags and did some rubbing on my tail pipes. I am very happy with my results. I sprayted down a rag with the acid and rubbed down the pipes, I couldn't believe how easily most of that nasty tarnish wiped right off. I hosed them down and then applied a coating of Mothers wheel wax.
I know I can spend a little more time and get them even better but this is a huge difference. Thansk again to all who gave the grat advice; Jason, Lakerat, and Bustag
Here is a before and after picture.

Thanks again fellas...my wife is even impressed with it. Mostly for how easy that stuff just wiped right off.
Now she is putting me to work today on shower doors and some of her stailess stuff in the house.
I better dilute it for that stuff. I used the straight acid on the tail pipes

DANG IT!!!!! Got my pipes all cleaned up.... put some wax over them... then put the boat in the water last weekend and ran her real good.... Now they look just like they did before?!?! WTF?!?!
Is that just going to be the way that goes? I am down for doing that a couple times a year or so, but if a few hours of use turns them right back to tarnished gray, then I think I will just leave them be.
Anyone have any suggestions for a solution that lasts longer?

Shiney chit is a labor of love. Ask any Harley owner. Any good semi-chrome polish will help. I like Mothers. Not so much keeping them from getting gooked up but cleaning is easier.

Hey Brother,
Come by and see me at the Loto OSS race next week. I should be across from Horny. I've been using my blend on the bikes for years.

Every time you run it that will happen. LOTO water is very hard with lots of mineral deposits. The tips are hot enough to burn off the water and the minerals are left behind.

That sucks.... My dad is a harley guy... he just laughed at me and said to get used to it....
Thanks for the input fellas... Iwill go see the products Donnie has to offer at the races.... SOmething has got to help it at least a little bit, granted, I used the Muriatic acid to clean them and the MOther's wheel wax I put on them was probably 10 years old... that could have had somethign to do with it. Thos tips do get hot though. Hopefully I can find a better wax to at least let them stay pretty looking longer. As always thanks for all the input fellas! [smilie=trink39]

I always try to wipe them off good after every outing. After even one long day on the water there are spots I can't get off with soap/water. When I decide I can't stand it any longer I just hit them with CLR from the yellow bottle a couple of times and voila! (thanks for the tip JJ)
I have a platform on the back of my lift which helps a bunch for cleaning too.

Thanks BD.... I think I will start doing that as well.
I have seen a few lifts that have a nice platform area back behind the lift. Know anybody that does that sort of thing? Econolift put my lift in; should I check with them or is that an "aftermarket" kinda thing? Thanks! Mark

Yeah, the CLR Yellow bottle works as well as anything I have tried. One day I was talking to a guy, and he says that black is unburned fuel, like inside the tailpipe on a car. Says to try this stuff to get better "mileage" and less pollution, so less 'black' on the pipes. He says its 100% guaranteed, so I have nothing to lose. I tried it, now I swear by it . Use it in everything, lawn mowers, everything. Boats are hard to judge, but I got about a five and a half mile per gallon increase in my Mountaneer, almost 7 in the minivan. Oh yeah, waayy less black on the chome, and seems to help my fuel usage from what I can 'guestimate'. check it out at freeboatgas dot com
